Internet and connectivity in Koh Samui: what remote-working guests expect
A growing share of villa guests aren't purely on holiday — they're combining a long stay with real work, often on a fixed schedule across time zones that don't care about a beautiful view. For this guest, "good internet" isn't a nice-to-have line on a listing. It's the difference between a five-star review and a refund request.
Test speed in the room that matters, not the router
Wifi speed measured standing next to the router tells you almost nothing. The test that matters is from the desk or table a guest will actually work from, at the time of day usage is highest, on the device they'd realistically use. Thick concrete walls and open-plan villas with pavilions spread across a garden are common culprits for dead zones a router-side test would never reveal.
Have a real backup, not a theoretical one
Fibre connections on Samui are generally solid but not immune to outages, particularly after heavy storms. A villa hosting remote workers should have a mobile 4G/5G backup router configured and tested in advance — not a plan to "sort something out" if the primary connection drops during a guest's stay.
Think about the whole setup, not just the connection
- A genuinely quiet space with a door that closes, away from pool noise and staff movement
- A desk at a workable height, not just a coffee table and a cushion
- Good, indirect lighting for video calls — not a ceiling fan spinning behind someone's head
- A local power adaptor and surge protection clearly available, not assumed
Be honest in the listing
Overselling connectivity is one of the fastest ways to earn a bad review from an otherwise easy guest. If the villa's internet is good but not exceptional, say that plainly, and let the honesty build trust rather than overpromising and hoping it holds up.
A remote-working guest doesn't need the fastest internet on the island. They need to know, with certainty, that it will hold up for the one call that actually matters.
In short
Remote-working guests tend to book longer stays, cause less wear, and return if the experience works — which makes getting connectivity right a genuinely good investment, not just a box to tick on a listing.
